THE NANCY CLEW ELLER ARTIST COMPETITION is open to all flutists ages 18 and older by the date of January 28th, 2023. Up to five finalists will be chosen. The previous year’s First Place Winner is not eligible.

RECORDED AUDITION: 

Submissions should not exceed 20 minutes in length.

    1. II. Cantilena from Sonata for Flute & Piano by Francis Poulenc-recorded with accomp is required.
    2. A piece of the applicant’s choice. All pieces that require accompaniment must be included with the submission—either with piano or electronic accompaniment resources—and no editing to the recording.

Finalists selected to the Final Round during the 2023 Convention will prepare a 20-minute program of their own choosing (including the Poulenc selection). The time limit includes any time between pieces. The 20 minutes Final Round repertoire must be submitted with the application, and performers will be bound to these repertoire selections.

The program should demonstrate diversity and a variety of styles and periods. This may include single movements of works and unaccompanied pieces. It is not necessary to perform all movements of a single work, but any individual movement of a work must be performed in its entirety. Cuts may be made in the accompaniment and repeats in the performer’s chosen repertoire is at the decision of the performer. Selections including prepared piano and other chamber music will not be permitted. Single movement works composed for flute and orchestra will be permitted—please no concerti or orchestral reductions.  A piano will be provided—any other equipment needed for performances is the responsibility of the performer.

CASH PRIZES: FIRST $1000 – SECOND $750 – THIRD $500. Finalists should arrive on or before Thursday (if requesting to rehearse with an FFA pianist) and compete on Friday. The First Place Winner will choose and perform one selection from their audition on the Closing Gala Concert, Sunday at 12:00pm.

FEES: 2023 Membership Fee, Entry Fee $50, Accompanist Fee $50 if needing an FFA accompanist at convention.

*Must pre-register for the convention and pay the convention fee by November 30th if chosen to compete.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION is open to flutists up through grade 12. The previous year’s First Place Winner is not eligible.

RECORDED AUDITION: Ballade by Carl Reinecke – recorded with accomp is required.

CASH PRIZES: FIRST $300 – SECOND $250 – THIRD $200.Finalists will compete on Friday. The First Place Winner must perform this selection on the Closing Gala Concert on Sunday at 12:00pm.

FEES: 2023 Membership Fee, Entry Fee $30, Accompanist Fee $40 if needing an FFA accompanist at convention.

*Must pre-register for the convention and pay the convention fee by November 30th if chosen to compete or if chosen as an Alternate.

COLLEGE YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION is open to full-time undergraduate students who are not more than twenty-five years old. The previous year’s First Place Winner is not eligible.

RECORDED AUDITION: Sonatine by Henri Dutilleux – recorded with accomp is required.

CASH PRIZES: FIRST $500 – SECOND $450 – THIRD $400. Finalists will compete on Friday. First Place Winner must perform this selection on the Closing Gala Concert on Sunday at 12:00pm.

FEES: 2023 Membership Fee, Entry Fee $30, Accompanist Fee $40 if needing an FFA accompanist at convention.

*Must pre-register for the convention and pay the convention fee by November 30th  if chosen to compete or chosen as an Alternate.

ADVANCED MASTERCLASSES WITH SATURDAY NIGHT GUEST ARTIST- Laurel Zucker, International Performer, Composer and Recording Artist

Open to all professional flutists, teachers, and very advanced students. Up to six performers and two alternates will be selected.

RECORDED AUDITION: Flute solo of your choice, up to ten minutes in length, with the complete instrumentation, which MUST be performed in the class. 

FEES: 2023 Membership Fee, Entry Fee $25, Accompanist Fee $40 if needing an FFA accompanist at convention.

*Must pre-register for the convention and pay the convention fee by November 30th if chosen to compete or chosen as an Alternate. 

HIGH SCHOOL MASTERCLASS WITH Tammara Phillips, Assistant Professor of Music at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida and FRIDAY NIGHT FLORIDA GUEST ARTIST

Up to three performers and one alternate will be chosen.

RECORDED AUDITION: Flute solo chosen from the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) list, grade 5 or above with complete instrumentation. The same work MUST be performed in the class. You can also find this list on our website under Important Links, then Miscellaneous and Handouts. 

FEES: 2023 Membership Fee, Entry Fee $20, Accompanist Fee $40 if needing an FFA accompanist at convention.

JUNIOR AND SENIOR HONORS FLUTE CHOIRS – Participants will attend rehearsals and perform at the final concert.

The Junior Honors Choir is open to flutists in grades 6-9.JUNIOR CHOIR RECORDED AUDITION: NO AUDITION REQUIRED – application will require contact information for a reference from your private teacher or band director, questions about your playing and performance history and scales that you know. Student should be able to play at the level of an FBA Grade 3 or above solo: FBA Solo Listing Link or you can find this list on our website under Important Links, then Miscellaneous and Handouts.

The Senior Honors Choir is open to flutists in grades 10-12.SENIOR CHOIR RECORDED AUDITION: : I. Allegretto from Suite Op. 116 for Flute by Benjamin Godard. No piano accompaniment required.

FEES for both choirs: 2023 Membership Fee, Entry Fee $15.
